Some people probably have felt that you broke up Alex's marriage, but we are excited to hear the truth from you. How did you and Alex Hoffman meet? Alex and I first met when we collided on a street in London. She was a junior in college studying abroad and I was a young American filmmaker starting my career. She ran right into me and I reached out and steadied her with my hand. But when I looked into her hazel eyes, I didn’t want to let her go. She was running off to deal with some school issue and she was clearly in a rush but I did my best to keep her talking. I wanted her number. I wanted to take her out. I didn’t understand the irony that, when we first met, she was already running. Another lifetime later, I was sitting in a boardroom in Manhattan alternating between staring out at the East River and scrolling through emails on my phone. It was a regular day. Just like any other day. I’d said goodbye to Heather, walked my boys to school, and grabbed a cab uptown for a meeting. I was sifting through emails in my inbox when I saw it, like a message in a bottle that randomly washed ashore. After twenty years of silence, Alex Hoffman wants to be friends on Facebook. My greatest strength and my greatness weakness are probably the same: I’ve got to be true to myself, no matter what the cost. I could say it’s a strength, as an artist. I could claim it keeps me from drifting off course. But, the truth is, it’s fucked up a lot of things in my life. It’s caused the people I love a lot of pain.
