EXCERPT: “Do you actually think your little human justice system is any match for the Earth’s Speaker?” Aaron took several steps toward David so they stood eye-to-eye. “I’m magical, little human. I can kill you with one glance, one flick of my pinkie finger.” Jane jumped up because she knew he was telling the truth. She felt the key heat up on her chest when he looked at it. He was magical and filled with power. David was an ordinary teenage boy. There was no fair fight here, only death. “David, stop.” Jane walked between them, turning to face Aaron. She needed to be brave. She might be plain Jane, but she was the only one in their town who understood magic. “If you hurt my friend, Aaron, I will not go with you.” Aaron nodded and took several steps back. The fact he’d backed down only reinforced how much he needed her help. David grabbed her shoulders and turned her so they were face-to-face. “You can’t be seriously thinking about going anywhere with this guy.” His brown eyes widened with so much alarm, it almost made Jane laugh. The look was somehow endearing. “Maybe.” She shrugged as if still contemplating her options, but she already knew what she wanted. She would go with Aaron. She had to. Jane had always known she was magical and that her sixteenth birthday was important. When she put on her mother’s necklace for the first time, she knew it was going to change her life. Aaron coming here and asking her for help was not a coincidence. This was her moment to find out more about herself and about her mother. It was time to take a risk. “Jane!” David shook her shoulders as if trying to shake some sense into her. “You can’t be serious. This guy could be a serial killer.” “I doubt that.” Jane rolled her eyes with annoyance. She was about to enter a magical world, and David was trying to hold her back. Nobody wanted her to be anything but Plain Jane. “I won’t let you go with him.” David shook his head, and his grip on her shoulders tightened. “You don’t have a choice.” She gestured to Aaron and tried not to smile. “Magical, remember?” David opened his mouth to argue, and Jane covered his lips with her fingers, much as he had with her earlier. An instant attraction took over as she starred into his eyes. The feel was somehow more magical than Aaron’s very existence. “I have to go, David. I’m not normal.” She shrugged again, trying to ignore the pleading look in his eyes. “I know you won’t believe this, but I think I called Aaron here when I was standing in the lake. Don’t you remember how large the waves got—?” Jane really isn't as plain as she thought she was... But then again, David wasn't who she thought he was either...
