Coffee shop owner Maggie Maguire doesn’t trust the new police chief her father hired to protect Maguire’s Corner. He’s a stranger, cold, bossy and annoyingly handsome. But, Maggie’s witnessed a serious crime and now someone’s trying to kill her. The man that aggravates her most might be the only one that can help her.

Police Chief Jack Munro likes his new job and his new town, and unfortunately he also likes the stubborn but beautiful town sweetheart. His self-imposed hands-off Maggie policy is about to be put to the ultimate test when he must keep her close to protect her while he tracks down a ruthless killer.

Determined to ignore Jack’s charms, Maggie attempts to help him unravel the mystery but when their lives hang in the balance she must decide how much she’s willing to risk to save the man she suddenly can’t resist.

EXCERPT:
“Do you have a gun?”

“What? No, I don’t have a gun. Why would I have a gun?”

“Here,” Jack reached down to his boot to remove the holster with his back-up gun. He slipped it out of the holster to show it to her. “It’s a .38. Did you attend a firearms safety class when you got your license?”

“Yes, but I don’t think this is necessary.”

“Maybe not.” He put it back into the holster and held it out to her. “Safety’s on. Look, you don’t have to carry it around with you or anything. Just keep it here.”

Maggie held out her palm and Jack laid the gun on it. She stared at it. “This makes things very real.”

“Good. Cause it is very real.”

“You sound like my father.”

Jack leaned toward her so close, she had to tilt her head back in order to see his face. Through her thin robe, she could feel heat radiate off his body and even in the dim light, his eyes smoldered with blue fire.

“No, Maggie. I’m the furthest thing from your father.”

Maggie opened her mouth to say something witty, but nothing came out. Jack loomed over her a moment longer then left. Locking the door behind him, she released a long held breath and headed back up the stairs. Looking around once more it upset her to think someone may have been in her home while she slept.

But, finding Jack in her bedroom doorway didn’t seem so unusual at all. And it should have been. It should have been downright troubling. After all, she didn’t like him. If she didn’t like him then why did he cause all those quivering girly feelings in her gut?

Maggie made her way back to her room, dropped the bag of stuff from her car on the dresser, and left Jack’s gun in her nightstand. Finally crawling back into bed, she tried not to think about Jack’s parting words or how much she agreed with him.
