Vanessa Garden

Hello and welcome. Our readers are looking forward to learning more about you.  Please tell us a little about yourself.
Hello! It's so lovely to be here :)

My name is Vanessa Garden and I write for Young Adults. Up until recently, I was a bookseller and absolutely adored recommending great reads to customers. But I now write full-time and wouldn't have it any other way. I'm married to a wonderful husband and we have three teenagers whom I adore and love hanging out with :)

Now onto some fun questions! If you could change one thing about our world, what would it be and why? That no child would go without love - that everyone would feel loved. Everybody, young or old, deserves to.

If you knew the exact date of your death down to the minute, what would you change about your life starting tomorrow? Not much. I really love my life. But I'd probably add a lot more travel with my family and friends and perhaps throw a big happy party every weekend :)

When was the last time you felt alive?  Really alive!  Swimming in the crystal waters of Croatia :)

When was the last time you helped someone that was desperately in need? What did you do? Was this person grateful? I took my elderly Dad, who is still grieving the loss of my dear mum, to Croatia to visit with family. He was extremely grateful and I felt so happy that I could help to bring some joy into his life.

What television sitcom is most like your family? Why? Seinfeld - because we are all absolutely crazy :)
What’s your favorite thing to do to relax? Read a great book or listen to music. A drive to the beach is always great too

Let’s find out a little bit about you as an author. Did you always want to be an author? Yes. I wrote my first book (I suppose it would be considered Fan-fiction now) about Skeletor  from He-Man, when I was 6 years old. All I remember is that Skeletor  had blue blood, lol

What authors had an impact on you growing up and as an adult? John Steinbeck - I remember reading 'Of Mice and Men' when I was thirteen. Lennie and George hit me so hard right in the heart that I could not stop thinking about them for months afterwards

Do you have any “must haves” with you while you’re writing? My laptop and a hot coffee, plus a pile of books and notebooks and pens scattered around me.

What have you learned the most from being in the writing business?
That you need to keep writing, otherwise it's so much harder to get back into once you take a break. But also, to believe in yourself. Writer's block is self-doubt in disguise

Tell us about your latest release. My latest release is 'Captivate' the first book in the Submerged Sun series.

Blurb:
In a glittering underwater world, where danger lurks behind beauty and power...

For the past twelve months since her parents’ death, seventeen-year-old Miranda Sun has harbored a dark secret — a secret that has strained the close relationship she once shared with her older sister, Lauren. In an effort to repair this broken bond, Miranda’s grandparents whisk the siblings away on a secluded beach holiday. Except before Miranda gets a chance to confess her life-changing secret, she’s dragged underwater by a mysterious stranger while taking a midnight swim.

Awakening days later, Miranda discovers that she’s being held captive in a glittering underwater city by an arrogant young man named Marko...the King of this underwater civilization.

Nineteen-year-old Marko intends to marry Miranda in order to keep his crown from falling into the sinister clutches of his half-brother, Damir. There’s only one problem. Miranda is desperate to return home to right things with her sister and she wants nothing to do with Marko. Trying to secure her freedom, Miranda quickly forms an alliance with Robbie — Marko’s personal guard. However, she soon discovers that even underwater, people are hiding dangerous secrets...

How did you decide on your story plot? Many aspects contributed to the story. There are some parts of the story I'd actually dreamed about and I was also influenced by an old family story where my great-grandfather said he saw a mermaid in the ocean while he was on a ship during World War 2.

How did you choose your characters names and location for your story? The location was easy - the deepest part of the ocean (The Pacific) but the story begins in Western Australia because that's where I'm from.

Do you have a favorite scene? Why? The garden scene, between Marko and Miranda, because it is romantic and gives me a beautiful visual :)

Do you have a character that you identify with? Who and why? I think I have a little piece of myself in every character, so I can't really close just the one
