Niki Balam traded her Mayan father’s ancient stories for law books and logic—until terrifying nightmares about her twin sister force her into the depths of the Guatemalan jungle. At the remote archaeological site of Choja q'eq, her sister Nayla has disappeared, leaving behind only questions and the unsettling presence of Zen Cazares. Golden-eyed and dangerous, Zen is everything Niki's ordered world has taught her to avoid—wild, untamed, and carrying secrets that could unravel everything she believes about reality. But when supernatural forces begin hunting them through the jungle and a malevolent shaman rises to claim an ancient power, Niki realizes Zen might be the only one who can help her navigate a world where ancient Mayan gods still demand blood and sacrifice. Excerpts “Niki!” Zen’s voice carried an urgency I’d never heard before. His golden eyes locked onto mine with frightening intensity. “We need to get out of here. Now!” I hesitated, torn between the need for answers and the fear in Zen’s voice. “Trust me.” The words carried a weight that seemed to stop time itself. Without waiting for my response, he scooped up Imul, cradled her against his chest and sprinted into the trees. With no real choice, I plunged after them into the jungle’s embrace. Zen ran like a man possessed, and adrenaline surged through my veins as I struggled to keep pace. Terror and anxiety kept my legs pumping and my muscles firing. Branches whipped at my face and arms, leaving stinging welts in their wake. I had no idea what we were running from, but Zen’s fear was infectious, spreading through me like wildfire. The helicopter’s roar grew deafening as it skimmed the canopy above us. I made the mistake of looking up, searching for it through the leaves. My foot caught on an exposed root, and I crashed to the ground with a cry that was equal parts surprise and pain. The impact drove the air from my lungs in a rush. As I lay there gasping, the world around me began to change. The spectral outline of a massive jaguar materialized, its coat rippling with ethereal flames that cast no light. My heart stuttered in my chest. The air thickened, becoming almost gelatinous as a heavy vapor rose from the earth itself. It swelled and surged, rolling across the jungle floor like a white tsunami. Everything it touched transformed—trees, shrubs, and rocks became ghostly versions of themselves, familiar shapes turned alien and wrong. “Zen!” His name tore from my throat, equal parts plea and warning as I staggered to my feet. About the Author: Lisa Dietrich holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology, which means she's professionally qualified to explain why ancient civilizations are infinitely more interesting than whatever is currently trending on social media. When she's not busy debating the finer points of Pre-Columbian mythology with her extremely patient husband, she writes steamy romance novels. 10/14/2025 06:28:44 pm
