“Morning, Helen.”

He no longer waited for her to invite him in, but he always knocked. They’d fallen into a routine, an increasingly familiar routine. An easy routine. That was unexpected. And unexpectedly companionable.

She slid a plate onto the table laden with sausages and eggs, a second with fresh toast, then returned with two mugs of coffee, taking the chair opposite him.

“Thank you,” he said, then stared meaningfully at the empty space on her side of the table. “Can I get you a plate?”

“I don’t feel like eating this morning.”

His expression told her he was torn between the age-old adage in a crisis of saying You need to keep your strength up, and his acceptance that she was an adult who could starve herself to death if she bloody well wanted to.

“I can starve myself if I want to?”

“Did I say anything?” He held his hands up in surrender.

“I could see you thinking.”

“That’s some skill, Helen. Bet you could make money off that.”
His tone suggested he was teasing her, and his slow smile helped her relax. Infinitesimally. He didn’t judge, and that made her curious about him. Why not? He was kind as well as hard-working, and that was a blessing she hadn’t known she needed.

“I’m not hungry, and I’m not starving myself either.”

“Good to hear. Although, if called as a witness, I’d have to say I’m not seeing much evidence of eating.”
