Happy Halloween everyone! In honor of the holiday, we asked our Inkspell authors about their favorite candy! Can you just see them going out trick or treating and hording their favorites? Or do you think that they are all about buying something that they don't like so that they don't eat it all? What is your favorite and does it match our Inkspell authors? Rebecca Hart:My favorite Halloween candy has changed over the years, just like my taste in clothing and music have evolved. When I was small, I was addicted to Charleston Chews, couldn't get enough of them. That is, until the day I found my first Mounds bars. Dark chocolate and coconut -- how can you go wrong there? That's right. You can't. Now that I don't trick or treat anymore, and the focus is on bringing my kids out, I just let them know "the rules" before we leave the house. "I call dibs on all the Mounds bars." Thankfully, they don't seem to mind. Deb Peterson: I really don’t have a favorite. BUT if I had to make a choice right this minute, I’d ask for the caramel apples I used to get while trick-or-treating in my youth. I lived in a small town, covered with fruit orchards and since the apples were harvested in the fall, many of the farmers would offer homemade caramel apples to the witches, ghosts, and goblins knocking at their doors. Trust me...these candied apples were to die for! Brooke Moss: Actually, the candy bar that I can't live without is rare these days. It was my Grandpa's favorite, then became my favorite, and now I can only find them in specialty shops. It's called the Uno Bar, and it is light and fluffy and delicious! The sad thing is...whenever I find them, I buy as many of them as I can afford, and then I bring them home to horde them. My kids don't even get any. How mean is that? Mark Jay Harris: Peanut M&Ms with milk. I could live on them for days! Annabelle Blume: It's very hard for me not to overindulge this time of year. While I love the pumpkin-y treats of fall, like pumkpin bread, pumpkin pies, and pumpkin lattes (okay, that's not true, I can't stand pumpkin lattes, but you catch my drift), it's the Halloween candy that truly breaks my will power. Rich, satiny cubes of caramel, sticky sweet ropes of licorice, and decadent velvety squares of chocolate tempt my taste buds. I'm usually able to resist the forbidden fruit of the season. Yet, when you pair salty and thick peanut butter with the sweet creaminess of chocolate, I'm a quivering mess. My absolute favorite candies are the peanut butter cups from the Unreal candy company (getunreal.com). They're just like their mainstream cousin candy, without any nasty preservatives, artificial ingredients, or GMOs. I can feel slightly less guilty when I eat them, and eat them I do! Sasha Summers:I have a SWEET TOOTH – so I can’t pick just one. When it comes to chocolate I LOVE Almond Joys and the newly discovered Dark Chocolate Raspberry M&M – like I needed another candy to crave. But if we’re talking candy candy – I love sour spaghetti and super tart cherry sours YUM! Ironically I don’t get these things to hand out at Halloween because I would eat them all – and then I’d have to go dresses as a pumpkin. LOL! I tend to stick with the kid faves like Laffy Taffy, Tootsie Rolls, and Nerds… Perk – I don’t really like any of them so there’s plenty for trick-or-treaters! Happy Halloween! :) Stephanie Keyes: Snickers of course, Kellen's favorite! It's because of all the chocolate "carmely" goodness. Yum! Jill Kaelin:My sweet tooth is pretty large, so there’s not much candy I’ll turn my nose up at. Chewy, chocolaty, sour, sweet…I like them all. But naturally, I have a favorite that I find irresistible. Lindt Lindor white chocolate truffles. These are my weakness. There’s just something about that creamy white chocolate inside that makes me want to devour the whole bag. Unraveling that blue, twisty plastic and finding the perfect ball of chocolate inside, makes my mouth water as I’m writing this. I have my students to thank for this addiction. A few years ago, one of my little sweeties bought me a bag of these divine chocolates. I’ve been hooked ever since. But, in my defense, may I just add that chocolate raises antioxidant levels in our bodies, so technically it’s really healthy. Happy Halloween! Inkspell Authors, editors and everyone would like to wish you a very Happy Halloween! We hope you get all the candy you wish for and enjoy the spirit of the season!

“I enjoyed spending time with you.” I shot a sideways glance at him. His cheeks reddened and he looked away at the sea, running his hand along the railing. I wondered if he had to try hard to like me or if it came naturally. Before we’d been assigned to one another, I’d hardly spoken a word to him. There was so much I didn’t know about him: what he liked and disliked, his goals, and, more important, the shape of his heart. The question just popped out of my mouth. “Do you think what we’re doing here is right?” He squinted his eyes. “What do you mean?” “Being here right now, building our lives on Paradise 21?” I kicked a chunk of crystal and it skimmed over the waves before plopping in the water. “It seems unnatural, as if we’re taking something that isn’t ours to take.” “We have to keep going, Annie.” He paused and turned toward me. “If not for the Guide, then for each other.” I wondered if he meant me and him, or our entire ship. Either way, he was right. We owed it to one another to keep life going and build a safe refuge. I thought of Mom and Dad, Grandpapa, Great-grandma Tiff, and all the other Lifers that spent their lives on the ship to get us here. I couldn’t let them down. Corvus had so much strength it radiated out and enveloped me. He’d seemed so simple and dull before, but as I spent more time with him I caught glimpses of an inner resilience and a personality much more profound. If Sirius was mercury, then Corvus was granite, solid and dependable, a person I could latch onto in a time of so much flux. Could I love him? Will Andromeda's feelings change toward Corvis? Can he prove his love for her through his actions? Buy Colonization today! With Halloween just a week away, we couldn't help but ask the Inkspell authors about their favorite Halloween costumes. We want the all the dirt...why is it their favorite costume and even a photo if we could "dig" one up! Aubrie Dionne:Growing up, I was a princess more often than not for Halloween. I loved being a princess. I used to use old ballet outfits and old curtains, and my mom would sew the gowns. It was fabulous! Recently, I dressed as Arwen from Lord of the Rings, which is also kinda princessy. BUT, this year what I really want to go as is a member of the Prometheus crew. I want a blue and orange space suit and a globe helmet so bad. I searched everywhere for the costume and couldn't find it. If I go as a Prometheus crew member, then I'm on my own to make it myself! Naya Nikki: I don't have a particularly favourite Halloween costume. However I have a tendency to dress as a witch or a fairy cause they are the easier ones to dress up as. Last year I sprayed my hair pink which was pretty cool...in fact everyone told me I should keep it pink which was a slightly worrying seeing as my natural hair colour is black and I didn't think it would suit me...haha. This year I am going as a witch, once again, but I found this really cool hat with a pink sparkly spiderweb printed on it and I love me some pink ;) x Lisa Voisin:I've loved Halloween all my life. I was one of those kids whose mother sewed all her clothes. While it was awkward at times being 'different', Halloween was the big payoff. My mom would sew my costumes and she always did an amazing job. My favorite from childhood was the Maid Marian costume she made for me. It was loosely based on the Disney cartoon character, so it was a light purple gown with one of those pointed medieval hats, complete with a long train of fabric behind it. At the time, it was magical! I've always loved dressing up at Halloween (even as an adult) so over the years, I've worn many costumes--from vampires and witches to gods (Krishna) and goddesses. This year, I'm going to a party dressed as Wonder Woman. All I can say is "Wish me luck!" Doesn't all this talk of costumes make you want to find an old ratty sheet? Be creative this year and have a Spooktacular Halloween!

I cringed as a few other guests turned to look at me, and pretended to pick lint off the Davenport insignia on my blazer lapel. I was beginning to think that story would haunt me forever. Poor Charlotte Davenport. Not nearly as pretty as her happily married older sisters. Forced to forgo her original career dreams in order to placate her parents by studying hotel management because she’s being groomed to take over for her father when he retires. Left at the altar during her wedding vows by her high school football coach fiancé, who’d fallen for one of his former students. Kicked out of their shared condo twelve hours after said debunked wedding by the new girlfriend whose name was “Kandi-with-an-I”. Forced to move home to assume her role as the twenty-seven-year-old spinster daughter of her wealthy parents. It was pathetic that I lived at home again. And what was more pathetic? The fact that I’d not once stood up for myself. When my sisters clucked about how sad it was that I was still single as they adjusted their diamond wedding bands, I never told them to back off. When they fixed me up with coworkers of their husbands and with friends of friends of friends, I always politely obliged. I never once told them I wasn’t interested in being fixed up with their money-managing, suit-wearing, and briefcase-sporting candidates. When I went to college with the intent to major in horticulture and floral design and my parents had scoffed, I’d quietly changed my major. It didn’t matter that the dream I’d had since I was ten years old was to own a greenhouse and flower shop. What mattered was that I was the daughter who didn’t have a husband or a family, which meant I was the one who’d inevitably take over the Astoria Resort. When my fiancé, Lance, said “I don’t” at our wedding, then promptly bolted from the church, I didn’t chase him. I didn’t cry and scream and throw a fit. I simply picked up the hem of my ridiculously fluffy gown, apologized to the crowd staring at me in horror, and then slid out of the sanctuary. And when I’d moved all of my things out of the condo with the intention of finding a small apartment in Astoria, I’d allowed my mother to convince me that my childhood bedroom was better suited for me. Instead of insisting I have my own space, all of my belongings went into storage and I moved into the pale pink bedroom I hadn’t lived in for over ten years. “Don’t worry, dear.” Mrs. Koistinen’s tinny voice cut into my thoughts. “You’ll find someone. Look at you.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ But Charlotte isn't the mouse everyone thinks she is. And a chance meeting ten years after the most memorable kiss will change her life forever. Check out The Carny today for all the sexy interactions between Vin and Charlotte! Today we've asked them to share with you their favorite recipes. Not only will you get to know our authors but in this blog, you will get some tasty treats! Kristy Centeno: The Puerto Rican Coquito is a traditional punch served at Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. The drink is similar to eggnog with rum. This particular recipe does not call for raw eggs. Nor does it call for you to crack open a fresh coconut. It's a very simple mixed drink. Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 1 hour Total Time: 1 hour, 10 minutes Ingredients: •2 15-ounce cans cream of coconut •2 14-ounce cans condensed milk •6 ounces white rum (use less if you like) •1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon •1/4 teaspoon ground cloves •1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg •1 teaspoon coconut (or vanilla) extract Preparation: 1. Mix all ingredients in a blender. 2. Refrigerate for about an hour before serving. Serve cold. Serves: This recipe makes about 36 ounces. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ T. Michelle Nelson: VEGETARIAN BLACK BEAN SOUP:1-2 cloves of garlic 1/2 onion 1/2 carrot 1/2 red bell pepper 1-2 tomatoes 4-5 cups of black beans splash of vegetable stock lemon juice from 1/2 a lemon salt to taste dash of cumin dash of chipotle chili powder couple splashes of worcestershire sauce Finely chop first five ingredients and puree 1-2 cups of the black beans. Add the first six ingredients together (the chopped items, the pureed beans and the whole beans) together in a pot and heat for 5 minutes with the veggie stock. After the five minutes, add in the salt, lemon juice, chipotle chili powder and cumin. When it becomes thick splash in the worcestershire. Some people dice in some celery as well, and you really can't even taste it once it's cooked, but I rarely remember to buy it, and well... celery sucks. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Brooke Moss: Here's a recipe for cheddar broccoli soup that my family loves during the fall! 4 heads broccoli, chopped 16 oz. Velveeta cheese, chopped 2 c. onions, chopped 4 c. water 2 cans cream of celery soup 2 cans cheddar cheese soup 1 can cream of mushroom soup Mix chopped broccoli and onions and 4 cups of water and boil. Allow mixture to boil for 5 minutes. Pour 2 cans of cream of celery, 1 can of cream of mushroom and 2 cans of cheddar cheese soup into mixture. Stir and turn heat to low. Put chopped Velveeta cheese on top slowly while stirring. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Annabelle Blume: Savory Mashed Potatoes This is a Thanks Giving recipe handed down from my Grandmother. Honestly, there isn’t much I enjoy about her cooking, as her turkeys tend to be undercooked and her veggies are usually overdone (don’t cringe, she’ll never read this), but these have always been the best part of any holiday meal at her house. 4lbs potatoes 1 cup sour cream 8oz cream cheese (softened) 2 tsp salt (for water) 1/8 tsp white pepper 1/4 chives 1 tbs butter 1 clove of garlic (minced) Add salt to a large pot filled with enough water to cover the potatoes. Add the potatoes (peeled and cubed) to the water. Boil until tender. Remove from water, drain, and mash. In a large bowl combine potatoes, sour cream, cream cheese, minced garlic, and white pepper. Mix with electric beaters until smooth. Top with chives and butter. Bake at 350 until headed through. We hope you've picked up some delicious treats for the season. Excerpt:“I tried to save him, Ellie. I swear to God I did.” Daniel had been unable to stop himself from reaching for her when she gave in to her grief. But he’d been unprepared for his own body's reaction to her nearness. His heart rate accelerated and his fingers ached to explore the lithe muscles of her back.
Get hold of yourself. Her sweet scent, a mix of honeysuckle and lilacs, tickled his nose. Daniel exhaled quickly, as if he could force the intoxicating smell, along with its heady effect, away at his whim. He concentrated on his breathing and slowing his heartbeat. “Don't worry. We’ll find the pirate that killed your father. I'll not be forgetting him anytime soon." He reached down and lifted her chin. His eyes searched hers. "I promise I’ll avenge him.” Ellie sniffed and swiped at her damp cheeks, fire lighting her blue eyes—eyes so like her father’s. “We’ll need a plan.” Daniel nodded. “By the way, why did you tell Harris I was Captain Winters’ son?” Ellie offered a shy smile and stepped from his arms. His fingers itched to reach for her, pull her back against his chest. Does she have to look so good in men’s breeches? “Captain Harris knew and respected my father. If he thinks you’re his son, there’s much less chance he’ll keep The Siren’s Call and risk repercussions from Papa’s allies. You know as well as I how well-connected my father was. On both sides of the law.” “Harris agreed to lend me another half dozen hands to get us back to Newquay. I think you should select the others. You know them all, have lived and worked beside them. Who better to know who will aid us the most?” A smile lit her face, sending a jolt of warmth through his body. “I can take care of that, but I only plan to bring one of them with us when we head out again to chase down the corsair dog that killed my father. We’ll use our own men for that.” Daniel quirked a brow. “Our men?” Ellie's eyes flashed sapphire. “For now, Captain O'Roarke, I need you. Papa’s men won’t take orders from me, even if they knew who I really was.” She settled herself on the cushioned chair behind the giant desk. “So, yes, our men.” The ornate throne dwarfed her, reminding Daniel of the little girl he'd seen storm the beach to greet her father over eight years ago. Even then, he'd been drawn to her, wanted to protect her. She flipped through the layers of paperwork stacked on the desk, lifting a pile and looking beneath it before setting it back down. She picked up another. “What are you looking for?” Ellie continued with her search, brow furrowed. She yanked open a drawer, rummaged through it. “His journal. Papa always kept a log.” “Bottom drawer on the right.” A grin spread across his lips when her head shot up, brows raised. He shrugged. “I’ve worked for your father a long time.” She leaned down and opened the bottom drawer. Ellie removed a thin leather-bound book and dropped it on the desk. She smoothed a hand over the surface, eyes taking on a faraway look. Daniel studied her bowed head as she opened the book with delicate fingers. Even with her flaming red locks cropped short, she was breathtaking. How could anyone mistake her for a boy? “What do you think you’ll find in there?” “Nothing specific…something…everything.” She didn’t bother to look up from the journal. “I just have to read it.” He could find no fault in her logic, only in her timing. “Can you read it after we select the men from Harris’s crew? I’m anxious to cast off and get underway.” Ellie glanced up. Her cheeks reddened. “Oh. Yes, of course.” She closed the logbook and rose from the chair. Coming around the desk, she bowed with a flourish. “After you, Captain.” Daniel stiffened at the words, but relaxed when he caught her teasing smile. The journey back to Newquay would be interesting, indeed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you liked the excerpt from Call of the Sea, you have a special opportunity to purchase a signed copy of the paperback on Friday! Make sure you order from our Inkspell store on Friday to get your signed copy! Today we get to hear from T. Michelle Nelson who is the author of The Life and Death of Lily Drake. Lily Drake is a new vampire and also a mom but her toughest choice is which man is right for her! Two hunky guys fighting over your heart is almost every girl's dream come true! When did you first start writing? What made you want to be a writer? I think I started writing from the time I could read. I wrote songs, poems, music and little stories. I always enjoyed writing. My favorite classes in school were always the English, Literature and Creative Writing classes. What inspired you to write your book? I wanted to write a book with an unconventional heroine. Lily Drake isn’t an eighteen-year old beauty queen. She’s thirty-five, a single-mom, and sometimes goofy. I wanted to write a book with a main character that I could relate to. Are you a pantser or a plotter? Total pantser. I think I have an idea or outline of where I’m going, and it never turns out that way! Do you have any writing rituals or special processes you complete before sitting down to write? I make a big mug of coffee, have pen and pad to one side, and laptop in front of me. In bed. Sitting at a desk is torture for me. Almost the entire novel was written from my bed with three dogs curled up around me. What authors inspire you? I admire so many, but for Lily Drake, definitely Margaret Mitchell. I remember reading “Gone with the Wind” and loving how Scarlett O’Hara was so imperfect. Mitchell wrote the go-to book on unconventional heroines. If you could only write in one genre for the rest of your career, what genre would you choose? Why? I’ll go with the blanket answer of Romance. Most of the things I’ve written have started off as something else, but they wind up becoming a romance. Which of the characters in your current release is your favorite? Why? I’m not sure I can pick one of my three main characters, but lately I’ve really been loving Burchard. Someday I want to tell his story. Are any of your characters modeled after real people? If so, which ones? Not really. All of my characters have certain traits like people I know, but none were written with any particular person in mind as the model. What music was on your playlist while writing your novel? Foo Fighters is always on my playlist, other than them, I have really eclectic tastes. At the time I was listening to Tool, Otis Redding, Nina Simone, Beethoven and Alice in Chains to name a few. I never listen to music while I’m actually writing though. I find it distracting. Morning person or grumpy bear? Grumpy Bear. I despise mornings. Tell us one thing it would surprise us to know about you? I’ve been a vegetarian for almost twenty-six years. What is next for you? I’m currently working on the second installment of the Lily Drake series. Do you have any unique skills or talents? If so, what? I play almost every instrument a little, with the exception of horns. Piano, Drums, Guitar, Bass, but none of them very well. If I were to look in your closet right now, would I find frills and lace or denim and tees? Denim and vintage rock tees. I do like to dress up on occasion though, but when I do it’s never frills and lace. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you T. Michelle for stopping by. We loved hearing about your book and life. Don't forget that Lily Drake is up for sale now. You can get it in print or ebook today! For Lily Drake, slaying vampires is easy...Dating them is the hard part. Lily Drake is your everyday hard-working single mom…until a gorgeous vampire shows up on her front door who she mistakenly assumes is her blind date for the evening. As one crazy scenario after another unfolds, Lily finds herself falling in love with two vampires, slaying the evil ones, and being prophesied as the savior of the entire undead race. Deciding between pizza and Chinese take-out will no longer be one of the hard decisions facing Lily Drake once she is immersed into vampire society. Humanity or immortality? That doesn't hold a candle against this question - which of the two handsome vampire cousins? The Life and Death of Lily Drake is not your typical vampire love story. It’s a tale about the humorous mistakes a woman makes simply trying to survive not only life, but the dating scene. How will Lily manage working full-time, taking care of her young son and fighting the undead at every turn? Lily will have to figure it out, but who better to save the world than a mom? Because it takes a lot of work to make Mondays fun, we at Inkspell decided to start a new blog feature we like to call Eyecandy Monday. Excerpt:
“Sorry. Should take this.” He turns to go outside, but it looks like monsoon season. “Yeah, man?” I can’t play, so I begin marking up the sheet music. Whoever put in the recommended fingerings is an idiot. “Wow. Okay. No, that’d be great. Any time, you know that. Uh, yeah, she’s right here.” At that, my ears perk up. I glance at Isaac, who’s looking at me through narrowed eyes. “Don’t think that’s a good idea.” A man’s voice booms from Isaac’s phone so loud I can hear it across the room. “Hah! You are so full of shit! She doesn’t exist!” Isaac rolls his eyes and holds out the phone. “I’m so sorry. My friend needs to talk to you. I’m not responsible for anything he says.” “Uh, okay.” His phone smells like aftershave. “Hello?” “Who are you?” “Um, who are you?” “I am every woman’s dream and what I want to know is: who are you; how old are you; and why Ike had the balls to tell me some little girl in Alabama plays Rachmaninoff better than me? And…go.” “I’m seventeen. It’s not like I’m twelve.” “Well then, that makes it much better. Totally trumps my Conservatory degrees. Please excuse me while I scrape my ego off the floor. I’m Dave, by the way. And you have a very sexy voice, anyone ever tell you that? Must be the accent.” “Uh…” “It’s okay. I often render women speechless. So, Sexy-and-Seventeen, what’s your actual name?” “Julianne. Or Juli. Whatever.” “Uh-huh. And now for the real question: Can you really play Rachmaninoff as well as Ike says?” “I don’t—I don’t know. He said that?” Isaac rubs his temples. “He did. And I challenge you to a duel. Hear that sound? That’s me throwing my glove on the floor. I bite my thumb at you. It’s on, Julianne-or-Juli-whatever. Next time I’m in Mobile, it’s you and me in a classical music death match.” I giggle. “Too much?” “A little.” “Sorry. Nice talking to you, Juli. Can you put Ike back on?” “Sure. Here.” Isaac mouths sorry. “Are you done? We’re trying to rehearse here. Some of us take our music seriously. No. I’m hanging up. Later.” |
